The Goddess Durga is a warrior goddess and the embodiment of feminine and creative energy (shakti). The name Durga means invincible in Sanskrit, with the dyllable "Du" representing hte 4 evils: poverty, suffering, famine and evil habits. Durga is appropriated as a destroyer of sins, injustice, irreligion, cruelty and laziness. To worship Durga is to ask for her aid in destroying one's own ignorance and indifference to growth of conciousness. Durga protects mankind from evil and misery by destroying such forces as selfishness, jealousy, prejudice, hatrend, anger and blind habits of the ego. Durga is considered the warrior aspect of Devi, and as such rides a lion or a tiger, carries weapons, and practices mudras or symbolic hand gestures. Durga manifests fearlessnes and patience, and never loses her sense of humor.
